Asynchronous communication means people can read, respond, or act at different times. Email, recorded video, project comments, and written decision logs are common examples. A live video call is synchronous because everyone must attend together.

The distinction matters for remote teams. Buffer found that 62% of remote workers collaborated directly with teammates across multiple time zones in its 2023 survey. Yet the same report found that only 32% worked mostly or entirely asynchronously. The numbers suggest that many distributed teams still coordinate a substantial share of their work in real time.

This report collects remote work async communication statistics from original company research and large workforce surveys. The newest source was published in 2024. The article uses 2026 in the title because it is the current edition, not because every survey ran in 2026. Survey results are identified as measured facts. Any arithmetic derived from those results is labeled as a calculation.

These figures come from different survey populations, so they should not be merged into one benchmark. Buffer surveyed remote workers, Microsoft surveyed workers across 31 markets, and Atlassian surveyed knowledge workers and executives. Each result describes its own sample.

How much remote work is asynchronous?

Buffer's 2023 State of Remote Work asked respondents to describe the balance between synchronous and asynchronous work:

Adding the last two categories gives a measured async-heavy share of 32%. In the preference question, 29% wanted mostly async work and 8% wanted all async work, for a combined 37%.

The five percentage point difference between current and preferred async-heavy work is our calculation from Buffer's published categories. It is not a separate Buffer finding. The even-split option was the largest preferred category at 36%, which is a useful check against treating async work as an all-or-nothing choice.

Buffer's 2022 State of Remote Work used a different question. It found that 38% of respondents worked at a company with an async-first policy, while 52% wanted their company to adopt one. Because the wording and samples differ, the 2022 policy result should not be read as a year-over-year comparison with the 2023 work-balance result.

Time zones create a practical case for async work

Buffer reported in February 2023 that 74% of respondents worked for companies operating across multiple time zones. For 62%, the time-zone difference existed inside their immediate team. The survey data was collected from October 10 through November 28, 2022.

That does not prove async communication causes better performance. It shows why teams use it. A written update can move between time zones without requiring one employee to start early or another to stay late. Live discussion still has a place when a decision is sensitive, ambiguous, or dependent on rapid back-and-forth.

The same Buffer study found that 19% of remote workers listed working across time zones as a struggle, and 14% called it their biggest struggle. Async practices can reduce scheduling conflicts, but the survey does not show that they remove them.

The meeting and focus-time problem

Remote communication is not automatically asynchronous. Video calls can recreate the office meeting calendar at home.

Buffer found that 75% of remote workers spent between one and ten hours per week in meetings. The distribution was uneven: 52% reported one to five hours, 23% reported six to ten hours, and 11% reported no meeting time. Only 37% said their company protected times when no meetings were scheduled. Another 36% said their employer did not offer that practice but they wished it did.

Microsoft's 2023 Work Trend Index, published May 9, 2023, combined a survey of 31,000 people in 31 markets with anonymized Microsoft 365 activity. It found that the average employee spent 57% of measured Microsoft 365 time communicating and 43% creating. Communication included meetings, email, and chat. Microsoft also reported that 68% of survey respondents lacked enough uninterrupted focus time.

The 57% figure is an activity measure inside Microsoft products, not a complete accounting of every work task. It also groups asynchronous email with synchronous meetings, so it cannot isolate async communication by itself. Its value is narrower: communication was taking more measured application time than document, spreadsheet, and presentation creation.

Microsoft reported that employees in the top quartile for email use spent 8.8 hours per week on email. Those in the top quartile for meeting use spent 7.5 hours per week in meetings. These are two different high-use groups, and the figures should not be added to describe an average employee.

In a separate Microsoft meeting study, published April 16, 2024, more than one-third of 18,100 surveyed workers said they had too many meetings and that most were inefficient. Seventy-five percent wanted more focus time to prepare for meetings.

Fast replies can crowd out priority work

Atlassian's State of Teams 2024 reported that 65% of knowledge workers felt it was more important to respond quickly to messages than to make progress on their top priorities. That result captures an important failure mode: a tool can support delayed responses, while team norms still demand immediate attention.

Async communication only protects focus when response expectations are explicit. Teams need to know which channel is urgent, how quickly routine messages require a response, and when a live conversation is appropriate. Without those rules, chat becomes a meeting that never ends.

Atlassian also reported that workers at organizations with poor meeting cultures spent 50% more time in unnecessary meetings than on high-priority work. This is a relative comparison from the survey, not a claim that half of all work time is unnecessary.

Written communication does not guarantee findable information

Async systems depend on records that people can locate later. Atlassian found that 55% of knowledge workers struggled to track down information even when they knew it existed. Another 50% had learned after starting a project that a different team was already working on the same thing. Fifty-six percent said inconsistent planning and tracking methods made collaboration harder.

Those results do not measure documentation quality directly, but they point to the cost of fragmented records. Adding more messages will not solve an information retrieval problem. A useful async system separates durable material, such as decisions and process instructions, from short-lived conversation.

Atlassian tested one document-led meeting practice with 104 employees and published the result on May 31, 2024. The broader survey attached to that report covered 5,000 knowledge workers. It found that 77% frequently attended meetings that ended with another meeting being scheduled, while 54% frequently left without clear next steps or an owner.

These meeting figures support better preparation and records. They do not show that every meeting should become a document.

Does async work reduce meetings?

Atlassian reported a real company experiment in its 2024 State of Teams report. Over two weeks, 43% of participating Atlassian employees had a meeting replaced by a recorded Loom video. The company said this freed 5,000 hours of focus time.

This was an internal operational result, not a randomized study of outside companies. The 5,000-hour total depends on Atlassian's workforce and experiment design, so it should not be used as a general savings rate. It does show that some routine meetings can be replaced at meaningful scale when employees have a recording and a clear way to respond.

This table is editorial interpretation, not survey data. The distinction prevents a common error in async programs: replacing every call without considering why people needed to talk.

Connection and communication challenges

Buffer's 2023 findings complicate the idea that remote work is socially disconnected by default. Seventy-five percent of respondents said they felt connected to colleagues or clients, while 17% said they did not. Among workers who did not feel connected, 56% cited a lack of social opportunities and 53% said they did not interact with colleagues.

Only 15% included collaboration and communication among their remote-work struggles, down from 17% in Buffer's prior survey. When forced to choose one biggest struggle, 8% selected collaboration and communication. At the same time, 30% said collaboration was harder remotely, and 70% said focused work was easier.

Taken together, the measured facts describe a tradeoff, not a simple win. Remote work can make concentration easier while making some collaborative tasks harder. Async communication can preserve focus and span time zones, but teams still need deliberate live time for work that depends on trust, negotiation, or rapid clarification.

What managers can measure

An async policy is easier to evaluate when managers track operating outcomes instead of message volume. Useful measures include decision lead time, meeting hours, time spent waiting for approvals, reopened work caused by missing context, and whether employees can find a prior decision.

These are suggested management measures, not benchmarks from the cited surveys. Each team needs a baseline before changing its communication rules. A reduction in meetings is not a success if decision time rises or employees lose access to managers.

Teams can start with one bounded workflow, such as weekly status reporting. Record the baseline meeting time, move the update to a shared written format, keep an escalation route for urgent issues, and compare results after several cycles. Reading the statistics responsibly

The available evidence has several limits:

  • Most results are self-reported survey responses rather than controlled productivity measures.
  • The surveys use different populations and question wording.
  • Buffer's detailed async survey was published in 2023 from data collected in late 2022.
  • Microsoft combines async and sync activity in its communication category.
  • Atlassian's Loom replacement result describes its own employees and should not be generalized as a universal rate.

The strongest conclusion is modest. Distributed work creates demand for communication that does not require simultaneous attendance. Workers show interest in more async work, but documentation gaps, rapid-response norms, and unclear meeting outcomes can consume the focus time that async systems are meant to protect.
