Key Takeaways
- BLS does not publish one national call-center-agent turnover rate.
- Industry separation rates and occupation employment data have different denominators.
- Teams should track voluntary exits, involuntary exits, transfers, and early tenure separately.
Call center agent turnover statistics are difficult to compare because "agent" is an occupation while "call center" can describe a workplace inside many industries. Public labor data may report customer service representatives, an industry separation rate, or an employer's internal exits. None is a universal contact-center turnover rate.
Public benchmarks
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted customer service representatives across the economy in its May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release. The Occupational Outlook Handbook projects annual openings using employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the occupation. Openings are not the same as employer turnover.
JOLTS publishes quits, layoffs and discharges, other separations, and total separations by industry. A call center can compare its parent industry with those series, but it should not label the result an agent turnover benchmark.
Private contact-center surveys can provide a closer operational comparison. Their value depends on the sample, geography, channel mix, outsourced versus in-house model, and turnover formula.
Calculate internal turnover
Use average headcount as the denominator and state the period. Separate voluntary, involuntary, internal transfer, and retirement exits. Report 30-day and 90-day attrition because early exits often point to recruiting, job-preview, training, or schedule problems.
A customer service virtual assistant can help cover documented queues, but outsourcing does not remove the need to measure quality, escalation, and retention in the delivery team.
